Ask HN: How do you market a small project?

I have a small project that is very niche and would like to reach people who would be into it. Do traditional google ads work? I would be happy with just a few hundred users, how do you do cost / benefit?

      I was going to try that but you need karma to post and that kind of turned me off of it
